A few months or more ago I stumbled on a unique radio-friendly post-punk band called Saving Apollo. They were on their debut single entitled, “Let It Out”. A song infused with infectious guitar-riff energy but also melodic and sweet on the ear.  Now the three high-school friends; Caleb Stackhouse, Garette Fallon and Alex Bierdermann from Pennsylvania State, are back with their sophomore single, “Never Going Home”, which is another building block towards constructing their full-length album in 2015.

saving-apollo-never-300Saving Apollo is an awesome band and thy prove it again on this single. But what sets these guys apart from other alternative, post-punk or pop-rock orientated bands out there is how they are very eclectic in their musical style on this track. On “Never Going Home” they infuse a Blink-182-type tune with a full-blown Avicii-sounding, anthemic, EDM synth motif.

“Never Going Home”, sends a little poppy vibe, but don’t let it fool you, listen to the whole track, the ending solidifies the song. The song is filled with emotion and meaning, while Saving Apollo finds a way to make it all get stuck in your head, with melody and harmonies.

The synth sounds were there on “Let It Out” too, but it played a secondary role, letting the gritty guitar sound drive the rhythm. This time around the synth sounds play a dominant role, ultimately sculpting the ‘attention-grabbing’ sonic pallette of the song. Confirming that they aren’t about all the same old rock -screaming until they lose their voices, or cranking up the guitar volume and bass until your ears bleed. No, these guys are working towards another musical dimension.

Whether you prefer the overall sound of the first or second single is a personal choice, but pretty irrelevant so early on in Saving Apollo’s recording career. I personally prefer the first, but I’m a guitar man by nature and choice! It’s pretty obvious that we need at least a couple more songs to know just where this band is heading sound-wise. Rather more important, are the traits that they do maintain in both recordings; melodic but biting, bouncy but insanely gripping, with lyrics that are personal, edgy and easy to relate to.

What people enjoy most about bands like Saving Apollo is the brutal honesty and the easy, intimate connection with the listener. The band strays away from elusive metaphors and complex metonymies, throwing everyday problems and issues, on love and life, in your face. They could easily be, ‘the boys next door’ or ‘your local garage band’, as they live the same problems you do. The only difference is they sing about it!

saving-apollo-never-400So, what kind of music are they, exactly? Who cares! With great hooks and choruses, what you get is a varied dose of energetic rhythms, heartfelt lyrics that get stuck in your head all day. Most bands work half a lifetime to achieve that!
